Session 2025-01-11
Narrative Summary
On the first official Call for Heroes in Breachill, four heroes arrived to answer the town's summons: Falwan, a halfling healer and investigator from Kintargo; William, a Champion of Shelyn; Theo, a sorcerer from the Ulfen lands; and Trisiel, a woodland elf native to Breachill. They gathered at the town hall with dozens of other citizens and adventurers, where a worried goblin woman named Warbal stood anxiously awaiting aid.
Warbal explained her dire situation: the Bumblebrashers, a goblin tribe living peacefully in the abandoned Citadel Altaerein atop Hellknight Hill, had fallen out of contact for over a month. Worse, she had observed red distress signals—their emergency beacon—burning atop the citadel's battlements. Falwan, moved by the plight of the missing goblins, immediately engaged Warbal in conversation to gather what information she could about the location and the Bumblebrashers themselves.
Council President Greta Gardania called the monthly assembly to order and invited Warbal to present her petition. But before Warbal could finish, chaos erupted. A panicked young man—the apprentice of the bookshop—burst through the western doors screaming of fire, his clothes ablaze. In moments, the chamber became an inferno as flames spread with terrible speed down the corridor. Two fire mephits, elemental creatures of flame and malice, manifested within the hall itself, laughing as they fanned the flames and terrorized the crowd.
What followed was a desperate scramble for survival. Twenty townsfolk were trapped, their panic rendering them immobile amid the overturned benches and choking smoke. The heroes split their efforts: Falwan worked tirelessly to guide panicked civilians toward the exits, her calm voice cutting through the terror. Meanwhile, Theo, William, and Trisiel engaged the mephits directly, working to neutralize the threat before the spreading flames consumed everything.
Theo demoralized the first mephit with cutting remarks and identified their weakness to cold. Nadira, the cleric who had arrived to answer the call, struck the first mephit with a radiant lance, destroying it utterly. William moved to support Nadira with a protective spell, shielding her from harm as he positioned himself to attack the remaining mephit. Trisiel channeled their connection to nature, wielding wood and leaves as weapons against the fiery creature. In a final coordinated effort, William's glaive struck true, ending the second mephit's existence.
With both mephits defeated and Falwan's steady evacuation efforts succeeding, the heroes managed to save all but one of the trapped townsfolk. The guards revealed that the young man who had fled toward Hellknight Hill was Calmont, the apprentice at the Reliant Book Company. Warbal's face went pale—the Bumblebrashers' citadel lay in that very direction.
Greta Gardania offered rewards: ten gold pieces for confirming the Bumblebrashers' safety, and another ten for bringing Calmont back to Breachill alive for questioning. The town's leadership made clear that understanding Calmont's motives was critical. The heroes accepted the call and made quick preparations to depart.
The ascent to Hellknight Hill took them up a rocky but well-marked path. As they climbed, the landscape shifted from bustling town to wild and reclaimed ruin. The citadel rose before them like a sleeping predator: a once-mighty fortress now crumbling, its stone walls strangled by ivy and moss, its battlements broken and settling with age. Above the central tower, red smoke coiled into the pale sky—the Bumblebrashers' distress signal, still burning. The gate doors hung ajar, creaking in the wind, and the heroes could see signs of recent activity around the grounds. The citadel awaited them, ominous and unknowable.
