Session 2025-04-12
Narrative Summary
With Theo unavailable and Trisiel absent (due to time zones and fatigue), the party of William, Nadira, and Frazzle (with NPC companions Alak Stagram and Renali) continued their exploration of the Goblinblood Caves. The session began with the party examining the remains of the hunting spiders from the previous encounter and discovering a shortcut through the caves—a twenty-foot drop into a chamber adjacent to the cultist camp.
Before descending, Nadira prepared the party tactically, casting Resist Energy (Fire) on William and Bless to grant +1 to attack rolls and saves for all allies within 15 feet. Frazzle created stone stairs for safe passage down the shortcut.
The party emerged near the Cinderclaw cultist encampment (area D6) where they encountered Malarunk, a half-orc priest of Dahak, along with four cultist followers: two charau-kas (ape-like humanoids) and two boggard scouts (frog-like creatures). Malarunk wore a dragon-claw gauntlet that served as a focus for his divine magic, particularly his Fireball spell.
Combat erupted with Malarunk casting Fireball as his opening action, dealing significant damage to the entire party. William absorbed the brunt of the blast (37 damage after Nadira's Resist Energy mitigation), nearly incapacitating him. Frazzle responded strategically by casting Darkness centered between the cultists and the party, blinding the enemies while keeping his allies in usable light. William was rendered unable to see Malarunk clearly, forcing him to use the Seek action to locate enemies in darkness.
The battle developed with Alak demonstrating his superiority—he sought Malarunk despite the darkness (crit success) and killed the priest with a single devastating power attack dealing 58 damage. The supporting cultists (charau-kas and boggards) struggled in the darkness, largely missing their attacks while Frazzle's offensive cantrips damaged multiple targets, Nadira healed allies, and William executed attacks when he had line of sight. Within two to three rounds, all cultists were defeated.
After the combat, the party searched the cultists' belongings and found critical items:
- The Cinderclaw gauntlet - an ornate piece of armor fashioned from drake scales with cold iron talons, still radiating malevolent heat
- A hunter's arrowhead charm made of jade - identified by Renali as the key to activating Huntergate (one of the six aiudara portals)
- 20 gold pieces and a gold religious symbol of Dahak (worth ~20 gp)
- Malarunk's journal - written in mixed Draconic and Mwangi, containing information about Cinderclaw plans to use Alseta's Ring to bring more cultists to Isger, with references to someone called "Belmazog" in the Mwangi Expanse
The party then advanced to Alseta's Ring itself, the central portal chamber. This vast circular room featured:
- Six statues of elven deities arranged around a dry fountain at the room's center
- Six stone archways (aiudara portals) corresponding to each deity
- One collapsed archway (Lotusgate, leading to Kyonin) destroyed long ago
- Spiraling patterns suggesting interdimensional travel
The six functioning gates were identified as:
- Lotusgate (destroyed) - Alseta, goddess of doorways
- Jewelgate - Yuelral, goddess of crystals and magic
- Duskgate - Findeladlara, goddess of architecture and art
- Huntergate - Ketephys, god of hunting and the moon (leads to Mwangi Jungle)
- Vengegate - Calistria, goddess of wrath and trickery
- Dreamgate - Desna, goddess of dreams and stars
Renali attempted to activate Huntergate using the hunter's arrowhead key, but the portal malfunctioned. Nadira's magical insight revealed that while the arrowhead was the correct key, the portal itself was damaged—likely destabilized when Malarunk and the Cinderclaws originally activated it. The portal remains dormant and requires repair before it can function again.
Alak expressed wonder at discovering such an ancient elven treasure hidden beneath the Hellknight fortress. William suggested documenting the network for future reference, recognizing both its potential value and danger in hostile hands. Renali was disappointed at the loss of immediate passage home but recognized the arrowhead could be used once the portal is repaired.

Session Mechanics and Notes
- Missing players: Theo (unavailable due to real-life events) and Trisiel (absent due to time zone/fatigue) - the DM autopiloted these characters minimally or they remained in party stash
- Dice curse: William continues to suffer from disproportionately bad rolls throughout the game, nearly dying multiple times from Malarunk's initial Fireball
- Tactical highlight: Frazzle's Darkness spell demonstrated excellent tactical thinking, creating an encounter dynamic where the enemy was blinded while allies could still fight
- Portal mechanics: The session introduced detailed lore about Alseta's Ring and aiudara mechanics, suggesting these will be important to the campaign's future
- Abbreviation note: D-numbered areas (D4, D6, D7) refer to the "Cult of Cinders" adventure module locations
