Session 2025-07-26
Narrative Summary
The party continued through the jungle and discovered a clearing dominated by rotting deadfall trees naturally arranged in a protective "C" formation. Renali's sharp eyes detected a hidden tripwire rigged with mining equipment designed to swing down on anyone triggering it. More importantly, she sensed a small group of sickly kobolds hiding within the hollow stumps, their labored breathing revealing their distress.
William approached with respectful speech, acknowledging the kobolds as Dragonkin and offering aid rather than hostility. The eight desperate kobolds slowly emerged from their hiding spots, gaunt and poisoned. They identified themselves as the Thornscales, explaining that Cinderclaw cultists had forced them to work in a gold mine until the ore's poisonous properties—arsenic contamination—made them too ill to continue. When they refused further work, the cultists pointed spears and threatened death, leaving the kobolds no choice but to flee into the jungle.
Frazzle used magic to enhance rations and wine, showing kindness to the suffering creatures. Nadira, speaking fluent Draconic and invoking Sarenrae's healing power, volunteered to treat their arsenic poisoning. With Renali's herbalist expertise identifying the specific contamination, Nadira spent 32 hours (with her Ward Medic feat allowing treatment of two kobolds at a time) channeling divine healing and preparing specialized remedies. All eight Thornscales were successfully cured, their scales regaining luster, their breathing becoming clear, and the metal taste fading from their mouths.
The Thornscales' spokesperson, Krezek, expressed profound gratitude and offered all the intelligence they possessed about the mine, including the location along the river to the east. He revealed that the cultists employed boggards (frog-warriors), charau-kas (ape-creatures), and other forces, with a particularly troubling leader named Hezle—a corrupted kobold transformed to breathe poison and possess scales of fire. Nadira offered sanctuary at Citadel Altaerein, describing the fortress, its residents (including the goblin Bumblebrashers and two existing kobold residents named Pib and Zarf), and explaining that the Thornscales could rebuild their tribe there. Krezek provided a carved bone token bearing the Thornscale tribe mark, instructing the party to show it to Hezle if encountered—it might remind her of what she once was before the cultists changed her.
The party continued south following the river. William successfully constructed a serviceable raft using fallen logs and jungle vines, while Theo found an excellent camping location and identified safe water sources. The river crossing proved uneventful, and the party continued tracking toward the Elephant People's territory, following Nketiah's directions.
As they approached the village, signs of devastation became apparent: broken branches, trampled undergrowth, smoke-tainted air. They emerged into a large clearing scarred by fire—charred tree bark, blackened undergrowth reduced to twigs, and burned ruins of small houses reduced to timbers and ash. Two trampled corpses lay near a solitary standing stone well. Theo's knowledge of society and his Bonuwat heritage revealed that the Elephant People were normally nomadic, so permanent structures indicated a seasonal shelter or sacred site. The evidence of violence was deeply troubling, suggesting the elephants themselves may have been involved in conflict—something that would be spiritually devastating to a people who view their animals as wise guides and family.
Frazzle's perception detected a desperate voice calling for help from within the partially collapsed building. However, two agitated elephants—likely the Elephant People's protective companions—guarded the area with threat displays. Frazzle's inspired idea of chiming the Ekujae ankle bracelets temporarily calmed the elephants and drew the trapped person's hope. When Renali attempted to diplomatically calm the elephants through gentle approach and soothing speech, her efforts catastrophically backfired. The larger elephant (Temba) interpreted her approach as a direct threat and charged, attempting to trample her.
Combat erupted briefly but the party quickly realized a better approach. Frazzle cast Shared Invisibility, wrapping the entire party in veils of starlight that rendered them unseen. The elephants, confused as their targets vanished, ceased their active assault. The invisible party carefully moved to rescue the trapped elder.
The man, Edka, had been pinned beneath a heavy log for over a day. He revealed that Cinderclaw cultists had attacked the Elephant People's settlement, demanding use of their elephants for mine work. When the tribe refused, the cultists burned everything in spite and captured or scattered the people. Edka had hidden precious items in the stone well before returning to assess damage. William lifted the log with assistance from Nadira, freeing Edka's pinned leg. As soon as Edka was freed and acknowledged the party to the elephants, both Temba and her companion Kesi immediately calmed, approaching with protective affection and concern.
Nadira used divine healing to mend Edka's injuries. The party ended combat and assisted the injured elder. Edka confirmed that the Elephant People had shown courage by refusing the Cinderclaws' demands despite lacking magical power or demonic servants. Temba and Kesi had managed to trample two of the cultist's boggard warriors before the vengeful burning. Theo used Mage Hand to retrieve treasures from the hidden well.
The session ended with the party having gained critical intelligence about the Cinderclaw Mine location, rescued and healed suffering kobolds, freed a community elder, and established peace with the protective elephants. Level 6 advancement was confirmed for all party members.
