Session 2025-08-09
Narrative Summary
The party located the Cinderclaw mining operation deep in the jungle, discovering a clearing shrouded in smoke with the distinctive reek of firepit and poison in the air. The site showed all the hallmarks of the dangerous Cinderclaw presence they had been tracking: an unnatural silence, complete absence of wild animals, and a large excavation pit surrounded by rough camp structures. Theo, the party's most stealthy member, volunteered to scout ahead after being enchanted with Haste and Tailwind spells to aid his speed and mobility. Before infiltrating, the party positioned themselves at the clearing's eastern edge, preparing for combat.
Theo approached the beast pen carefully, but the massive mokele-mbembe caged within—a prehistoric reptilian predator rivaling a giraffe in size—quickly noticed his presence. The great creature's intelligence was evident in its golden eyes and its awareness of what was happening. Rather than risk a prolonged stealth attempt, Theo made a fateful decision: he released the beast by turning the wheel mechanism on the pen's western side. As soon as there was enough clearance, the mokele-mbembe surged out with surprising speed for something of its size, bellowing a thunderous cry that echoed across the entire mining operation.
Chaos erupted instantly. The camp descended into panic as miners scrambled from the excavation pit—a 50-foot-deep strip mine filled with boggard warriors and charau-ka workers, all sickened from prolonged exposure to the arsenic-contaminated earth. Hezle, the mine's blue-scaled kobold boss, emerged from her laboratory hut with crossbow in hand, already barking orders to rally the cultists against the rampaging predator. Simultaneously, Frazzle summoned a wooden ladder to help the panicked miners escape the pit, an act of mercy that immediately marked the party as targets when the cultists realized strangers had orchestrated their chaos.
The battle became a melee of multiple forces. Frazzle, surrounded by freshly-emerged miners who had been alerted to his presence through their keen sense of smell, attempted to vanish using invisibility magic. But the miners' primal tracking instincts proved superior to his concealment, and they closed in despite being unable to see him. Fortunately, the mokele-mbembe's rampage provided unexpected salvation—the massive beast crashed through the cluster of miners surrounding Frazzle with bone-crushing force, eliminating the immediate threat.
Nadira and William, positioned between the beast pen and the laboratory, were caught in the mokele-mbembe's path. William raised his shield but could not brace against twenty tons of prehistoric fury. Both champions were trampled and battered as the creature thundered past, determined to reach Hezle, whom it perceived as the source of its captivity. Hezle, blinded by Renali's darkness spell, attempted to flee toward the jungle while desperately throwing improvised alchemical bombs at her pursuers. One explosion caught William full-on, adding burn wounds to his trampling injuries.
Mid-combat, reinforcements arrived: a vrock demon, summoned from the Abyss by the Cinderclaws, dropped from the sky into the chaotic melee. The creature unleashed its full arsenal—a bone-rattling screech that left William stunned and disoriented, followed by a toxic spore cloud. Nadira succumbed to the poisonous miasma while William managed to hold his breath and avoid the worst effects. The vrock's addition turned an already desperate situation more dire.
Meanwhile, Renali transformed into her true anadi form—a sleek, eight-legged arachnid with predatory grace—and pursued the blinded Hezle across the laboratory hut's roof. Though she couldn't land a killing blow, Renali's presence kept the kobold alchemist on the defensive and unable to coordinate effectively.
In a moment of desperation and bold decision-making, Frazzle used a scroll of Deinonychus form, then transformed again using his oracle magic into a full-sized Tyrannosaurus. The transformation was dramatic—cosmic energies swirled around him as his form expanded thirty feet tall, complete with massive teeth designed for crushing bone. The sight of a second prehistoric predator in the mining camp shook the cultists' resolve. However, the transformation left Frazzle vulnerable, and he took devastating blows from the vrock and cultist attacks, suffering two critical hits in quick succession before being knocked unconscious.
The session ended with the party in crisis: Frazzle down, William stunned from the vrock's screech, Nadira sickened by the demon's spores, cultists and the mokele-mbembe still fighting throughout the camp, and the vrock demon maintaining air superiority. The party noted afterward that they were facing a boss (the vrock) while still entangled with numerous minions, and that they had depleted their resources significantly before encountering this major threat. The DM noted they needed to rebuild the Foundry server, which had begun crashing mid-session, so the encounter ended with the party in serious peril.
