Narrative Summary

The party continued their journey downriver through the jungle when shouts from above drew their attention. Three half-orc demon hunters—Ifiok, Mbeki, and Jorik—clung to the branches of cecropia trees, trapped since dawn by two massive quetzalcoatlus prowling the destroyed remains of their campsite below. The aerial predators had scattered their supplies and equipment across a small island, methodically hunting for scraps.

Rather than risk direct combat with creatures the party identified as enormous and dangerous, William, Theo, and Frazzle devised a plan. They positioned a blackpowder keg on the riverbank while Theo used Stealth to avoid the pterosaurs' notice. Frazzle then summoned an ember fox—a small fire elemental—which eagerly bounded to the keg and ignited it with its blazing teeth. The resulting explosion was tremendous, its thunderous crack echoing across the jungle and sending the quetzalcoatlus into immediate flight. The creatures took to the air and vanished into the deeper jungle, ending the threat without a single shot fired.

Ifiok and her companions descended from their refuge, grateful and impressed by the party's quick thinking. Ifiok introduced herself as leader of these Lake Ocota tribe hunters, explaining they had been tracking a dangerous kishi—a shapeshifting demon that had mauled her nephew near their village. When she learned the party was hunting Cinderclaws and working to destroy their dragon pillars, her expression darkened. She revealed that the pillars were creating a protective barrier around something the locals called the "Fortress of Sorrow," and that her people had encountered evidence of Cinderclaw scouts and activity throughout the region.

The party exchanged information: Nadira healed Mbeki's injured arm while the hunters shared what they knew of the pillars. Ifiok described a yellow pillar surrounded by constant lightning, its carved dragon head glowing sickly yellow. A red pillar guarded by an actual dragon sat in ancient ruins to the east. Both locations were protected by powerful magic that her hunters could not penetrate. Frazzle attempted to convince them to join the assault on the pillars, but Ifiok and her companions, skilled hunters rather than magical warriors, declined—though they promised to join the fight against any Cinderclaws once the pillars were disabled. The party accepted supplies (about two weeks' worth of rations) in exchange.

The party then pushed north toward the yellow dragon pillar. The journey through rain-soaked jungle proved treacherous; massive trees lay split open with blackened, smoldering wounds, their insides glowing red. As they approached the glade containing the yellow pillar, the perpetual storm above intensified. Lightning strikes became frequent, thunder shook the ground, and the very air crackled with electrical energy. Through the downpour, they could make out the yellow-carved dragon head atop the pillar, glowing with sickly light. Dark shapes—later revealed to be sabosans—roosted in the upper branches, clearly aware of their presence.

Nadira, protected by Theo's Resist Energy spell, stepped into range and cast Dispel Magic with overwhelming force. A lightning bolt tore through her in retribution, but she pushed through the searing pain and succeeded in unraveling the pillar's magic with a counteract result of 31 against DC 22. The yellow pillar shuddered, its crackling aura flickered and died, and the wooden structure split and crumbled. As it fell, the perpetual storm began to dissipate—thunder grew distant, lightning faded, and the torrential rain slowed to a gentle drizzle. Natural light filtered through the canopy for the first time in days.

However, the three sabosans guarding the pillar shrieked in fury at its destruction and launched themselves from the trees. Combat erupted as the bat-like humanoids glided down with hostile intent. The party, already bloodied but determined, engaged the creatures. The fight was fierce but short; the party's accumulated power and tactics overwhelmed the sabosans, who attempted to flee as they realized their cause was lost. Frazzle's summoned spark bat and the party's coordinated attacks brought the encounter to a swift conclusion.
