Session 2025-11-15
Narrative Summary
The party traveled to Vusker's Carts & Wheels workshop in Breachill to meet the mysterious "Concerned Party." The workshop was silent and still, two entrances offering passage into a cavernous space filled with tools and cold forges. The party entered cautiously, William leading with the caution of a brass marching band, and found a tall, sharp-featured man named Heuberk Thropp waiting with several Scarlet Triad sneaks. He held Fadelby Vusker, the wainwright, bound and gagged in the adjacent storeroom.
Heuberk claimed he represented mercantile interests and offered a deceptively reasonable proposition: he had cast discern lies and wanted information about Alseta's Ring, specifically the notes detailing the portal network, gates, and their locations. He already knew about Voz Lirayne and the party's involvement in her death; he was testing their honesty. Heuberk's demeanor was controlled and businesslike, though William's continued provocations wore away his patience. The Champion of Shelyn made clear his contempt for the scoundrel, comparing Heuberk unfavorably to the Hellknight who had killed Voz.
Nadira insisted on examining the wainwright before agreeing to any deal. Heuberk allowed it—he needed the notes more than he needed Vusker dead. Nadira confirmed the craftsman was alive but badly beaten, unconscious from nonlethal damage. Meanwhile, Theo noticed that a sneak near the door held a triggering string attached to the workshop's mechanized lathe.
William continued his provocative remarks, and Heuberk's patience finally shattered. The merchant proposed that Theo alone would fetch the notes, while William, Nadira, Renali, and Vusker remained as security. William laughed off the threat, declaring that the hostage meant nothing—if Vusker died, so did all of them. This broke Heuberk completely. He ordered the sneak to trigger the trap.
The lathe exploded in an apocalypse of spinning blades, gears, and sharpened metal fragments. The trap had been overwound deliberately, and its failure cascaded into catastrophic violence. Renali took three slashing impacts in rapid succession and collapsed, barely clinging to life. William took a massive gear fragment full-force on his shield. The trap would continue spinning, delivering three attacks the next round, then two, then one.
Combat erupted in earnest. Nadira, acting with Sarenrae's grace, healed the now-awakened Vusker with divine magic and struck at the sneak guarding the storeroom. Her blade found the gap between armor plates and tore deep with a bloodseeker beak affixed to his rapier, leaving her wounded. Theo, standing outside the blast radius, intimidated the string-holder and cast Containment, attempting to stop the trap activation—but the sneak was already committed and the spell failed to prevent the detonation.
Heuberk surrounded himself with mirror images—three illusory duplicates of himself became visible among the genuine threat. One of his sneaks pivoted with deadly grace, rapier whistling toward Nadira. Her blood pooled as the bloodseeker drank deep. The workshop became a literal charnel house of spinning death.
Renali fell to the lathe's relentless assault, her blood pooling beneath her, her breathing shallow and labored. Then Nadira called upon Sarenrae, and golden radiance erupted across the workshop. Renali's eyes fluttered open; the healing was just enough to keep her alive. She rolled toward safety, gasping.
Theo moved through the workshop with reckless precision, ducking and sidestepping gears that screamed overhead and blades that embedded themselves where he'd stood heartbeats before. He reached the storeroom, breathing hard but untouched, carrying Vusker to safety.
Heuberk, taking in the situation with cold calculation, cast Crushing Despair, filling the workshop with shadows and despair. Some of the party saved against the effect; others were slowed by the weight of despair. William remained slowed without recourse.
The battle was fierce and chaotic. William, despite being slowed, struck at Heuberk and his sneaks. Nadira unleashed a beam of sickened radiance, striking multiple enemies. Theo cast Blazing Bolt at the nearest sneaks, their flesh scorching.
The session ended mid-combat as the hour grew late (2:00 AM for participants in Kuwait), with Heuberk's mercantile negotiation having catastrophically failed into actual violence.
