Session 2025-11-29
Narrative Summary
The party returned to Citadel Altaerein to rest and recover after their intense battles against the Cinderclaws and the Scarlet Triad. For the first time in what felt like an age, they had time to simply breathe, to think, and to plan. The immediate threat was gone—no cultists lurking in shadows, no dragons bearing down on them, no ancient fortresses crumbling around them. Just time, opportunity, and the concrete work of building their stronghold into something functional and defensible.
The party dedicated several weeks to restoring and expanding Citadel Altaerein. The work began with the most critical structural repairs: the collapsed stairs, crumbled walls, and damaged battlements that had stood in disrepair since the citadel's abandonment.
Week 1: William, drawing on his expert crafting knowledge, took charge of rebuilding the battlements. Though his efforts were solid, the work was more challenging than expected, and Falwan had to smooth over a few complications. Simultaneously, hired crews cleared the rubble from the collapsed stairs and began laying the foundation for new ones. Another crew repaired the walls in the training hall, completing that room's restoration entirely. The week cost 71 gold in labor and materials.
Week 2: William returned to the battlements with renewed focus. His efforts this time were exemplary—the critical success meant the northern battlements were fully restored and now safe to patrol, capable of supporting siege weapons if needed. Moreover, his efficient leadership saved 5 gold in worker expenses. The collapsed stairs were finished, providing safe access between the ground floor, battlements, and basement. The Court of the Nail was sealed and made structurally sound. Only one major structural repair remained: the Records Room walls. The week cost 66 gold.
Week 3: William tackled the final structural repair: the dampness-plagued Records Room. His success sealed the archives, made them weather-proof, and prepared them to house books and scrolls. With this final repair complete, the Citadel was no longer "ruined." Every room was structurally sound. The party had now unlocked the ability to build any facility they wanted in the available empty rooms. The week cost 18 gold.
With the structural work complete, the party focused on constructing facilities to serve both their own needs and those of the growing garrison that would defend the citadel.
Week 4: William built an armory—a secure location for weapons and armor that would grant all future equipment and upgrade checks a +2 circumstance bonus. The room's hardness (18 doors and walls) made it resistant to intruders. Concurrently, a crew began constructing the pantheistic temple—a facility where all the party's deities could be honored. The temple reached 50% completion, with the basic restoration done but consecration work still pending. Meanwhile, Frazzle trained the Bumblebrashers in the art of stealth, teaching the goblin tribe how to move so silently that even shadows lost track of them—an impressive demonstration of 32 on his stealth teaching check. The week cost 70 gold.
Week 5: William finished what he'd started. Working on the temple with the reverence befitting a Champion of Shelyn, he completed the chapel's restoration, consecration, and preparation for worship. The temple would now grant all Religion checks made within the Citadel a +1 circumstance bonus and could serve as a venue for weddings, funerals, or diplomatic meetings with religious groups. Simultaneously, a crew finished constructing the Dormitory, providing bunks, footlockers, and basic amenities for up to ten people. This facility was crucial: the party could not recruit Guards or specialized staff unless those workers had a place to sleep. They had just unlocked the ability to recruit a proper garrison. The week cost 65 gold.
The work continued. William expressed interest in constructing a Smithy as the next priority, which would require a workshop space and could provide income and crafting bonuses for the citadel. Nadira proposed training a specialized team of medics and nurses who could provide battlefield healing support. The vision for Citadel Altaerein expanded from a ruined fortress into a true stronghold—functional, defensible, and ready to support the party's growing operations against the Scarlet Triad.
